Twitter is a social
networking service that allows people to send and read text messages that are
up to 140 characters. These text messages are called “tweets.” To post tweets,
one has to register for a twitter account. Unregistered users can only read
tweets. It was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone,
and Noah Glass. By July 2006, the micro blogging site was launched and quickly
gained worldwide popularity. Twitter was invented as a way for individuals,
using an SMS service, to communicate with a small group. Twitter allows an
individual to update their status to let others know what they are doing.
Twitter
can be used for business. Twitter allows businesses to have real time
interaction with their customers, which can be negative and positive.
Businesses are able to “fire fight” before something gets out of hand and
damages their brand online. Sometimes, things do get out of hand. The groups of
people who tweet are usually a little older, wiser, and may be more affluent.
This is the perfect audience for many businesses looking to promote themselves
on the internet. McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts, and Starbucks are a few examples of
businesses using Twitter to promote themselves. Unlike Facebook, Twitter allows
businesses to promote their products without the message getting lost in the
cluttered activity. Twitter can provide feedback for businesses, which can help
the businesses improve their products. Also, Twitter allows brands to put their
company’s message straight into a consumer’s pocket in any location.
Twitter
is mostly used socially. Twitter is a social networking site! Twitter involves
public communication by allowing people to send, read, retweet and reply to
tweets. One can also communicate with friends and others through direct
messaging on Twitter. This can be both negative and positive. Twitter allows
one to say whatever is on their minds, which can start fights. If an account is
not on private, anyone is allowed to view it. This may have negative
consequences if what someone is tweeting is not appropriate, or rude. Accounts
that are not private also allow for communication with strangers, which can
lead to very negative things. Although Twitter can be negative socially, it can
also be used positively. Twitter allows for communication between friends. One
can let others know what they are feeling or doing.
Twitter
can be used for news and entertainment. Twitter has a tab called “discover.”
When one clicks on this tab, they are able to browse through trending topics.
This tab also allows one to find stories and news for a person based on their
connections, location, and even language. This is negative and positive. The
news on Twitter may not always be one hundred percent true, so it is not a very
reliable source for news and information. On the other hand, Twitter makes
spreading news quicker and easier. A person can follow actual twitters that are
based mainly about the news. CNN and Fox 5 News have twitters that allow for
the passage of news. Also, a person can follow their favorite celebrities or
restaurants, and find out news about them very quickly and easily. Miley Cyrus
and Olive Garden are examples of celebrities and restaurants on Twitter.
Twitter
can be used for entertainment. The shows a person watches can be found on
Twitter. They use Twitter to market their show. Pretty Little Liars is an
example of a show that can be found on Twitter. On the positive side, this
allows someone to find out special showings, sneak peeks, and many other
things. On the negative side, Twitter can reveal spoilers. Twitter can also be
used recreationally. When someone is bored, Twitter is there for the person to
tweet about how they are bored, see what their friends are doing, and entertain
them. This is positive because it can entertain someone. It’s also negative
because it makes someone reliable on the Internet to have fun.
Twitter is a large part of communication and connection
in today’s society. Twitter has many positive uses, but also has negative uses.
Twitter functions in many areas including business, social, entertainment,
news, and recreational.
Know most of these things from Twitter because I
